Obituary

Thomas Larry McFarland died on November 29, 2022, at The Village of White River Junction, VT.

Born in Brookfield, Ohio on 13 October, 1936, Tom was the youngest of six children born to Wallace and Wilma (Riley) McFarland. Tom graduated with honors from Brookfield High School and went on to study English Literature and Journalism at Westminster College in PA, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1959. While working as Sales Director at Johns Hopkins University Press, Tom completed a Masters in Liberal Arts, continuing onto a successful career in journalism and publishing.

In 1961, Tom married Dianne Leffert Oursler and the couple moved to Baltimore where they were blessed with two daughters: Ellen Dianne and Cara Suzanne. In 1971,Tom's role as Assistant Director of University Press of California took the family west to Berkeley. To make the cross country journey fun and comfortable for the girls and Sammy, the family Yorkshire Terrier, Tom removed the car's back seat and filled the entire space with a mattress.

In 1979, Tom was appointed Director and Editor of the University Press of New England. The family moved to Hanover, NH where Dianne and Tom became involved community members. A lover of the arts, Tom played four-hand piano, sang with Dianne in Dartmouth's Handel Society and spent years supporting Opera North in a range of roles from volunteer to board president.

Tom loved to travel and shared his passion for planning and exploring the world with his family. Dianne's mother once nicknamed him the ITG (Indomitable Tour Guide), and he carried out his role with great enthusiasm. To celebrate his 80th birthday, Tom planned an educational trip to Cuba for the entire family of nine.

Tom's mother taught him early on to embrace household chores, including baking, and he developed this artistry throughout his entire life, turning out delicious goodies that he loved to share.

Above all, Tom was a man who loved his family. As a husband, father and grandfather, Tom was dedicated and steadfast, his generosity and support a constant. On November 23, Tom and Dianne celebrated their 61st anniversary; their later years were complicated by Tom's Alzheimer's diagnosis, but the strength of their bond was both admirable and powerful.

Tom is survived by his loving family: wife Dianne, daughters Ellen (Steven) Jackson and Cara (Michael) Pestorius; and three grandchildren: Morgan (Pestorius) Landolfi, Taylor Pestorius and Riley Pestorius.

The family is grateful for the caring staff of The Village, specifically the memory care team and caregiver Kathleen, who were so good to Tom during his illness.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Tom's name to The Alzheimer's Foundation or Bayada Hospice, PO Box 1590, Norwich, VT 05055.
