Virginia was the first of four children of Mike and Marie Biba, growing up in Chicago Illinois. After graduating from Our Lady of Lourdes High School in 1957, she attended the St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing in Evanston, IL, receiving her RN degree in 1960. She met Jack McCleery when she was a nurse and he was studying medicine at The University of Chicago Medical School. They married on June 9th, 1962. They lived in Seattle, WA, Miami, FL, and Chicago, IL while Jack completed his medical training and Virginia practiced as a nurse. In 1969 they left the big city to settle in the idyllic town of Norwich, VT with their two children.

Virginia and Jack raised their two children in Norwich in a home on the corner of Mechanic Street (later renamed Hopson Road). Jack practiced medicine in the department of Gastroenterology at the Hitchcock Clinic and Virginia stayed home with her children for several years before returning to the workforce helping to build the Referral Services Department at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center.

After more than 48 loving years of marriage and 50 wonderful years living in Norwich, Virginia moved to Kendal of Hanover in 2019.

Virginia McCleery loved gardening, reading, and long walks with her dog Finnegan. She was an enthusiastic skier and golfer, and enjoyed playing piano and listening to opera.
