Obituary

Virginia Hildebrand Webb91, a longtime resident of Manchester and North Pomfret, VT and finally Hanover, NH died on March 12, 2012 at Kendal at Hanover, NH.

She was born on June 2, 1920, the daughter of Frank and Anna Hildebrand. She was a graduate of St. Joseph's Academy and Katherine Gibbs in New York City.

For a number of years she worked for B. Altman and Vogue Magazine. At the beginning of World War II she served with the American Women's Volunteer Service and later overseas with the American Red Cross in New Guinea, the Philippines and Japan.

In 1951 she married Albert Webb, former medical paratrooper who participated in the Normandy Invasion and the Battle of the Bulge.

Avid skiers, she and her husband spent six months skiing in Europe. Upon their return they built a motel in Manchester, VT which they ran for sixteen years. After her husband's death in 1977 she moved to North Pomfret where she designed and built a house and continued her art career. She was a member of the Southern Vermont Art Center and the Green Mountain Hiking Club. Over the years she did volunteer work for a number of charitable organizations, most recently as a mentor for schoolchildren, and summers she often harbored New York City Fresh Air Children.

Survivors include a brother, Frank Hildebrand and a niece and nephew.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Denis Catholic Church in Hanover, NH on Thursday, March 15, 2012 at 11:00 AM and burial will be private.
