William (Bill) Robert Baschnagel, Lt. Colonel USAF (Ret.)passed away on Thursday, December 14, 2017, at his home in Etna, New Hampshire after a long struggle with cancer. He was 77 years old.
Born September 30, 1940 to Robert Baschnagel and Dorothea Lauterbach in Rochester, NY, he graduated from Dartmouth College in 1962 as a member of the ROTC program and joined the Air Force.
On August 1, 1969 he married Frances Korzeniewski and served 20 years in the military. In 1982 he returned to Hanover, NH with his family and built a home where he enjoyed the proximity to Dartmouth College.
He is survived by his wife Frances, his two children Josh and Siri, and two grandchildren Willis and Wesley Baschnagel (of Forest Hill, MD). He is also survived by his sister, Linda Sevard.
Bill became very active and involved as a citizen of the Upper Valley. He was a Hanover Selectman from 2000-2009; a member of the Advance Transit Board from 2003-2017; and a member of the Hanover Improvement Society in 2000. He also served on many committees such as the Affordable Housing Commission, the Building Code Advisory Board, the Conservation Commission, the Parking and Transportation Board, the Transportation Management Board of Vital Communities, and the Upper Valley - Lake Sunapee Regional Planning Commission. He was the co-chair of the committee of the Parking Facility Taskforce that planned and secured Town Meeting approval for the Hanover Parking Garage. At Dartmouth, he recently became a founding member of the Dartmouth Uniformed Services Alumnae (DUSA), a much needed veterans group.
Visiting hours will take place Thursday, January 4, 2018 from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm and 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Rand-Wilson Funeral Home, 11 1/2 School Street, Hanover, NH. On Friday, January 5th a memorial service will be held at St. Denis Roman Catholic Church at 11am, 8 Sanborn Rd, Hanover, NH. A reception will follow at the church.
